Evaluation 2

Evaluation Task 2 - How Effective is the Combination of Your Main Product and Ancillary Texts?

I have produced a voiceover for this task which will play over my trailer, featuring my ancillary texts.

I attempted to include stereotypical conventions of the psychological thriller genre, to attract my target audience. I have included synergistic features that my audience will recognise as a part of my campaign.

Our film starts with high key lighting which is counter typical of the thriller genre, this establishing the couples relationship. This builds to the plot twist (dis-equilibrium). The text 'When Love Turns Sour' appears, this is the tagline of 'Fixation' and is also on my poster, which my audience will remember as a part of my campaign. Following the plot twist, the lighting turns to low key lighting, this reflects the mood. Low key lighting is a stereotypical convention of the thriller genre, seen in 'Se7en' and 'The Purge'. Low key lighting is synergised throughout my three products, highlighting the thriller genre of 'Fixation'.

My target audience is 15-30 of both genre, this age group will enjoy following the complex storyline and will understand the plot twist. They will like the exciting and suspense-building narrative. From research, I found males prefer the action and psychological aspects, whereas females prefer films with romance. Therefore, 'Fixation' will effective target my audience.

Another syergisitc feature I used was to include the same 'Charlemange' font throughout my 3 products, in the same red colour, red represent danger which is stereotypical of the thriller genre  and represent love which highlights the romantic tone at the start.  'Fixation' is easily recognisable for the audience because of the font/colour. The word 'Fixation' is on our merchandise and promotional Facebook page in the same font/colour, this spreads the campaign further, which will increase revenue.. Additionally, the release date is in the same font/colour, henceforth repeatedly reminding them.

For my magazine cover, I used 2 images of the main characters. I filled one of the images with black  creating a silhouette effect. I placed the silhouette image in the background, this shows them closer, this is to represent a shadow of the relationship they once had. The coloured image at the front in the middle, bringing the focus to this main image, this shows him grabbing her suggestive of the plot. In both images he is looking at her echoing the name 'Fixation'.
The background is black with glass shattering. The title is in the same font as my other products and the red makes it stand out.

The main image on my poster is the protagonist and antagonist face to face, his eyes are fixated on her echoing the name of our film and she is looking away, suggestive of the plot. There is an image of glass shattering in the middle. At the top of my poster, I included Selma's eyes, to highlight our name 'Fixation', as fixation is often visual gaze. The image of the eyes are subtle, therefore keeps the focus on  the main images. The black background of the poster fits the thriller genre and is synergy with my other products. I included 'Fixation' tagline 'When Love Turns Sour' in the same font on my trailer and poster. I believe synergising the font throughout my text has increased the professionalism of my texts.

My poster and magazine cover include synergy they have the theme of shattered glass on them both, this is to represent the characters destructive relationship.

I have featured the protagonist and antagonist on both my poster and magazine, as they are both main characters and from research similar film included more than one character. The characters are wearing the similar smart/ casual clothing throughout my three products. This shows they are middle class. The clothing is realistic adding verisimilitude, making it more relatable to the audience. Lewis is wearing a shirt on both my poster and magazine emphasising his power and dominating status. My audience will recognise the main characters remember my campaign.

I decided to include institutional information on my poster and trailer, however from research i found this to be uncommon on magazine covers. Institutional information is important as it credits the production company, crew and actors.

To conclude, I believe that the combination of my three products are effective, as I have successfully used synergy making elements recognisable, meaning the audience will remember my campaign. I have include stereotypical conventions of the thriller genre which will appeal to my target audience. I believe the audience will be interested and intrigued, whilst also visiting the promotional 'Fixation' Facebook page and purchasing the 'Fixation' merchandise, which also have the synergistic font, highlighting my campaign, increasing revenue.

Evaluation 3

Evaluation Task 3 - What Have You Learnt From Your Audience Feedback?

Trailer Feedback

In order to gain feedback, we uploaded our trailer onto my Facebook, this allowed friends and family to comment what they thought about my trailer. We received a lot of positive feedback about how people enjoyed watching it. This positive feedback lacked constructive criticism, therefore we created questionnaires and gave them to people in our year and class.

We received feedback that the beginning of the trailer is too long and it confuses the genre for the audience. Therefore, we shortened the clips at the beginning to make it faster paced, however it still clearly shows the romantic tone, therefore making the dis-equilibrium more impactful.

We also changed the inter titles from reviews. The text now gives the audience more of an insight to the characters/film engaging them more. We got this inspiration from the text that appears in 'Red Eye'. Additionally, we placed one word from each in red, this is to emphasise the thriller genre.

We changed the music at the beginning as some people felt it was too classical and confused the genre.

Poster Feedback

INCOMPLETE DRAFT

This is the first incomplete draft.

I received a lot of negative feedback for this:

  • Why is there red -confusing
  • Photos not proportional
  • Don't like the 'chiller' font

Therefore, I restarted, however I still wanted to include the glass as it is synergy with my other products. I also, took another photo of Selma.

FIRST DRAFT

In order to receive feedback for my poster, I asked friends, family and peers, one thing they 'like and dislike'.

Like:
  • Glass shattering- dramatic.
  • Dark background shows it the thriller genre.
  • The title is bold and stands out.
  • The different sizes of the billing block look professional.
Dislike:
  • Actors names are too plain and boring.
  • A bit simplistic.

Change 1

I decided to add another primary image of Selma's eyes. this is because 'Fixation is often associated with visual gaze, emphasising the name. I got a front, close up image of Selma. I use the 'magic wand' tool to remove the rest of her face, leaving just the eyes, I then put them in black and white. I then copied the original coloured image and removed everything apart from the pupils. I then layered this over the black and white. This makes the piercing colour of the pupils stand out. This lead to the issue of the placement of the actors names.

Change 2

I moved the actor/actress name to the bottom, the names frame the release date making it stand out. I change the colour of the surname too red, this is the same red as the title and release date. The colour makes the actors names stand out and the red is stereotypical of the thriller genre. This adds professionalism.

Magazine Feedback

FIRST DRAFT

I received verbal feedback for my magazine poster, the overall response was positive. People said they liked the glass synergy with my other products. Additionally, they said they thought the overall look showed the thriller genre. Negative response I received was that the title of the magazine is too plain and boring. Also too much space on the magazine.

Change 1
I chose the name 'Hollywood' as the film industry is associated with the location. I got an image of the Hollywood sign. Therefore, the audience will pick up the magazine and see the popular landmark and will associate the magazine with the film industry. I removed the background using Photoshop, I also removed the o's in 'Hollywood' and replaced them with film reels, to emphasise that it is a film magazine.

Change 2

Image result for film magazine coversTo fill the space on the left, I took another image of Lewis and Selma looking at each other and closer together. I filled in this image with black using the 'bucket tool' and the 'paint brush tool'. To create a silhouette effect. I placed the silhouette image in the background, to represent a shadow of the relationship they once had. He is looking at her echoing the name 'Fixation'.
Additionally, I placed the head in front of the title, this makes the image stand out. From research I found this common on film magazine covers.
